Snelgrove Ice Cream

by Snelgrove's
1929 – 2008 IT CAME BACK

Back, on a smaller scale. Dreyer's ended the brand in March 2008, citing dwindling demand. In 2021 the founder's great-granddaughter reopened a Snelgrove shop in St. George, and more Utah shops followed in 2025. It is sold by the scoop and the pint at those shops; we found no sign of it back in grocery freezers.

Salt Lake City's own ice cream, scooped since 1929 and packed into cartons for freezers all over Utah. Dreyer's bought it, kept it running for nearly two decades, then switched the brand off in 2008 and filled the plant with its own pints.

🧾 One more thingThe giant double-decker cone outside the old Sugar House plant went up in 1962 and was sign maker YESCO's first three-dimensional sign. It is still standing, though the plant behind it is gone.

❓ People also ask

Why was Snelgrove ice cream discontinued?

Dreyer's, which owned the brand, said demand was dwindling and that its own range had more flavors for younger Utah shoppers. In Snelgrove's last year the Salt Lake plant made about 300,000 gallons of it, against more than 7 million gallons of Dreyer's.

Can you still buy Snelgrove ice cream?

Yes, at the family's revived Snelgrove shops in Utah, starting with St. George in 2021 and Centerville in 2025. The shops sell it by the scoop and in pints to take home. We found no evidence it is back in grocery stores.

Is the Snelgrove cone sign still there?

Yes. The double-decker cone on 2100 South dates to 1962 and was YESCO's first three-dimensional sign. It still stands even though the ice cream plant behind it is gone.
