Wattamelon Roll
by Friendly's
Gone — the Wattamelon sherbet cake that Friendly's sells now, and bills as a return, is a different dessert in a different shape. The 1982 debut comes from Friendly's own sworn trademark filing; the 1985 date printed everywhere else is when that trademark registered.
A log of sherbet built to look like a watermelon, chocolate chips standing in for the seeds, sliced into wheels at Fourth of July cookouts. Friendly's got out of the ice cream roll business in 2021 and took it along.
🧾 One more thingFriendly's extruded the sherbet in concentric layers — pink core, lemon middle, green rind — then flash-froze the outside with liquid nitrogen so the log would hold its shape through the rest of production. The method was patented.
