Swanson TV Dinner
by Swanson
Limited — Swanson-branded dinners vanished from American freezers around 2010 when Pinnacle Foods folded the line into Hungry-Man, though the name never fully died: it stayed on pot pies, and Conagra sells a full Swanson dinner line in Canada today. The broth on the soup aisle is a separate Campbell's business. Pinnacle's own filings still listed the dinners in December 2009, so the exact end date is fuzzy.
Turkey, cornbread dressing, peas and sweet potatoes in a three-compartment aluminum tray, sold from 1953 in a box drawn to look like a television set. It taught America to eat dinner on a folding tray in front of the screen, and the country has never entirely recovered.
🧾 One more thingCompany legend credits a salesman named Gerry Thomas, who supposedly dreamed it up after Swanson was stuck with 260 tons of unsold Thanksgiving turkey in ten refrigerated rail cars — a story the Swanson family has disputed for decades. Whoever thought of it, a first run of 5,000 trays became ten million in 1954.
