Sir Grapefellow

by General Mills
1972 – 1975 GONE FOREVER

Gone — both cereals were out by about 1975 after roughly three years. The dates come from nostalgia reference works and dated 1972 commercials rather than from any company announcement, so treat the endpoints as close rather than exact.

Grape oats and grape marshmallows, sold by a moustachioed British flying ace who spent every commercial dogfighting a German rival named Baron von Redberry — whose own berry cereal sat on the same shelf. General Mills was selling both sides of the war.

🧾 One more thingThe gimmick was borrowed from the monster cereals, which had launched the year before with Count Chocula and Franken Berry bickering at each other. The monsters came back every Halloween and the pilots did not: the two aces were outsold by the very format they were copying.
