AISLE 4 Β· CANDY & GUM
Mary Jane
by Necco
Back β Spangler bought the brand at the 2018 Necco auction without plans to make it, then licensed it to Atkinson Candy of Lufkin, Texas, which announced the return in April 2021: same molasses-and-peanut-butter build, rounder and bite-size. Some accounts date the restart to 2020.
Peanut butter and molasses taffy in a yellow wrapper with a red stripe, sold a penny at a time since 1914 and fated to spend its second century being misunderstood by teenagers. When Necco's factory went dark in 2018, the Mary Jane went with it.
π§Ύ One more thingCharles N. Miller invented it in his father's Boston confectionery, which operated out of a building that had once been Paul Revere's house, and named the candy after a favorite aunt.
