Mary Jane

by Necco
1914 – 2018 IT CAME BACK

Back β€” Spangler bought the brand at the 2018 Necco auction without plans to make it, then licensed it to Atkinson Candy of Lufkin, Texas, which announced the return in April 2021: same molasses-and-peanut-butter build, rounder and bite-size. Some accounts date the restart to 2020.

Peanut butter and molasses taffy in a yellow wrapper with a red stripe, sold a penny at a time since 1914 and fated to spend its second century being misunderstood by teenagers. When Necco's factory went dark in 2018, the Mary Jane went with it.

🧾 One more thingCharles N. Miller invented it in his father's Boston confectionery, which operated out of a building that had once been Paul Revere's house, and named the candy after a favorite aunt.
