Freezer Queen

by Freezer Queen Foods
1958 – 2006 GONE FOREVER

Gone — the Fuhrmann Boulevard plant closed in 2006 and the Freezer Queen name went with it. The waterfront factory has since been demolished; an apartment tower stands where the gravy tank used to be.

Buffalo's contribution to the TV-dinner era: boil-in-bag salisbury steak swimming in gravy, priced for households counting every dollar. For nearly fifty years it was both a freezer staple and one of the city's biggest employers.

🧾 One more thingFederal inspectors found live cockroaches in the gravy tank on more than one visit in early 2006, and the USDA's shutdown letter cited "serious insanitary conditions" throughout the plant. Rather than fix it, the owner closed the factory, put about 175 people out of work, and moved the surviving recipes to a brand called Family Buffet.
